Assessment in ESL

Post by RozannaB » Mon Jun 25, 2012 11:50 pm

There definitely some issues when it comes to assessment in ESL. With all the various ways to assess students in the classroom, it is difficult to determine what works best when working with ELL's. I know that there is a new shift in schools to include alternative assessments to regular tests. One of the shifts is towards performance-based assessments. These can involve open-ended solving tasks, hands-on projects, student portfolios, tasks in writing and group projects. This may make it difficult to determine whether or not it is formal or informal testing. While there are definitely advantages to performance-based assessments, I wanted to know what the negatives are for this type of assessment in the ESL context.
