During a recent paper where I was comparing bilingual programs to ESL programs, I realized that in the ESL program I teach, I do not do enough to help my students retain the cultural and linguistic components of their native languages. I decided to have each student (they range from 6 to 8 years old) pick a holiday celebrated by their culture that is not celebrated in the United States and tell the other students all about the holiday. They could make drawings to accompany their presentation or bring something from home used in the celebration. Afterwards the written/drawn descriptions could be hung in the hallway under the banner, HOLIDAYS AROUND THE WORLD. This way other students in the school would also be learning about the culture of these students. Anyone have recommendations for other things to do to help these students to retain their cultural and linguistic heritage?
