New Headway - a mistake?

Post by shmooj » Sat Sep 20, 2003 2:36 pm

I'm contemplating adopting this text for our school for use across the range of our adult classes and using the pronunciation books to complement it.

SHould I or should I not?

(please not that I am not talking about OLD Headway or American Headway)

Hi!

Why do you assume it could be a mistake?

What level are your students?

What are their aims?

Best wishes

I have all the copies of the different levels of New Headway Pronunciation and I find them very useful and simple to teach.

The coursebook is good as well. I say go for it.

Pronunciation New Headway helps student tacles pron without feeling overwhelmed

Good luck!

student tacles
student tackle

our German state school obliges us to use headway

It is ok

but you have to explain a hell of a lot sometimes....

I like them

No they are not paying me :-)

Best wishes

Pronunciation activities

Post by DeSummit » Sun Sep 28, 2003 12:27 pm

Lots of activites you can do with students for pronunciation

Bingo
TelephoneNumbers (peat, pit, pet, pat, pot and under each word is a number like 1 2 3 4 5 6, etc...like telephone...you can even make a telephone picture and put those words) then say the words and tell them to find the telephone number. If student have got the pronunciation of word right, they will have the telephone number...amazing how much fun the student have with this game
this of course is testing the vowels more than consonants

can do role play

can pretend they are on the telephone with someone

at groceries/supermarket store

can even do a student dictation

Pronunciation is fun as long as the teacher is prepared

I've just finished New Headway Upp Int and I still found it to be rather too similar to the old version - it seems to assume everyone wants to a future Jourrnalist or Author :? The last pages of the book have a mammoth reading on Oppenheimer and Nuclear Testing. Great topic for ending a course

If you are looking for alternatives I recommend English File. It makes lesson prep much less depressing. And the articles in the Upp Int are actually interesting to read!
