Intermediate Reading on the Web?

Post by Ock » Wed Sep 10, 2003 4:04 pm

Can anyone tell me some web sites where I might find reading material suitable for comprehension at an intermediate level? Most stuff is too difficult. Perhaps news in a simplified form? Any suggestions, pse?

These are some sites I suggest to my students. (They are adults, but some of these, although intended for junior high or high school kids, are still interesting for adults.):

Planet Yak http://216.247.63.129/index.htm

News Stories http://www.literacynet.org/cnnsf/week.html

Ghost in the Museum (a choose-your-own-ending story) http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Forum/3941/ghost1.html

Nasreddin Stories http://web2.uvcs.uvic.ca/elc/studyzone/ ... /index.htm

Easy Stories
http://web2.uvcs.uvic.ca/elc/studyzone/ ... /index.htm

Harder Stories

http://web2.uvcs.uvic.ca/elc/studyzone/ ... /index.htm

Current Events

and finally, if you want to check out my website, I have some short readings I use for my class.

If anyone else has any to add, I'm always looking for more.

Thanks for your prompt response.

All the links seem promising - and I enjoyed reading the items from your own website.

My students are all French and mostly pensioners - I think the item about Liberia might be the one I'll start with. However, I couldn't see any more news items on that site. Do they just put them up one at a time?

Perhaps someone else will come up with more suggestions.

Thanks again.

Yes it does appear that the one site doesn't archive its stories. Too bad. The only thing you have to watch for is that they don't change the site before you use it!

The other day someone told me about the following:-

www.americaslibrary.gov/cgi-bin/page.cgi

The texts are intended for children but the language is *not* childish.

I find the historical ones VG - there's one about the construction of the Empire State Building. Another good point is that they are short.

Oh Ock--I use that website all the time. My students like it very much. (They range in age from 18 to 80.) The site it put out by the Library of Congress. There are a lot of websites that are written for Middle School to High School students that are suitable for adults.
