"He pursued a banking career."
Does this mean:
"He led his life as a banker"
and not "He wanted to become a banker"?

"He pursued a banking career."
If he's looking back at his life now, then its likely he had a life as a banker. For example if this was written in a biography...

The other explanation is grammatically possible with an appropriate context.
