"Custom demanded that a person should have gifts for the child."
I think I understand the literal meaning, but I don't understand
why this sentence is particularly registered in a dictionary.
What kind of custom is this?
Here 'THE child', not 'children', so is it talking about a
particular anniversary or something of THE child?
