The Troubles of the Near Future

Post by andrewgessman » Sat Dec 24, 2011 4:01 am

The current funding crisis in our schools, nationwide, is bad enough. Conditions in the future (the near future at least) will be even worse - that’s not a prediction so much as a reality that is currently unfolding and just hasnt’t hit us yet in full force. This concerns all realms of education in this country - not just ESL. Fewer teachers, larger classes, fewer student services, etc. I’m worried that ESL will be hit especially hard, as will the Humanities in general (language, literature, social studies, art). I’m not trying to sound fatalistic, just realistic. We have to plan for this, to get ready for it by organizing and adapting practices to see us through the difficult times that are coming. The times are difficult already for teachers, but they are going to get worse before they get better, and that’s a fact. Are we prepared? Are we even prepared to acknowledge the bumpier road ahead, let alone get ourselves ready for it?
