Relevancy for HS students

Post by mlordon » Tue Jun 12, 2012 9:11 am

As part of my teaching practicum for ESL in grades 9-12, I surveyed my students to ask for ideas on subjects they wanted to cover before the end of the school year. They wanted to practice English that would help them in real life situations. I designed lessons that had them filling out real job applications and we practiced interviewing with suggested interview techniques. I had them read real estate magazines and pick out their 'dream home' and then write about it. Afterwards, we calculated how much a mortgage for that home would cost in real dollars. We also filled out real scholarship applications from the guidance office. It opened their eyes to see that these applications expect them to take part in extra-curricular activities.

I was pleased to see the work they put into all of these lessons and I think they appreciated the lesson's relevancy to them. I highly recommend it.
