Use of Translation Apps

Post by mackyaj » Fri Sep 16, 2016 1:41 am

Here in China smartphones are ubiquitous and it is difficult to dispute their power in aiding communication or their use as a learning tool. Furthermore, translation is a quick and convenient method of assertaining meaning without losing focus on the source.

However, I am concerned about whether the use of translation apps is detrimental to the vocabulary learning process. Basically, any time an unrecognised (not always unknown) word appears in a book, article or teaching exercise, the word is translated; normally, in my opinion, without any 'deliberate attention'.

Does anyone have any arguments for / against the use of translation apps with regard to the vocabulary learning process??
