Appropriating Language Policy
I like how Freeman and Dixon-Marquez made the administrators, educators and parents take ownership in implementing the dual-language program. It makes so much sense for them to have input. The SDP realizes that we live in a multicultural/multilingual global society and was open to implementing the dual-language program and was willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen. However, it will truly take a village to make it happen, i.e. administrators, teachers, and parents. Unfortunately, as indicated in chapter 2, the initiative was interrupted when district was reconfigured and people were fired and rehired, there was “tension and feeling of mistrust.” The new leader had a different interpretation of Title III which did not leave room for any flexibility, according to Sanchez “nothing we can do to change that.”
