Two 11th graders passed the HSPA on their first try!!!! The other 8 students that took the test came very close, several scored between 196 and 198, so close.

I am so glad that the test is broken down into components so that they can concentrate on those areas that they need to improve on. Sometimes state assessments can be so frustrating to ELL's, especially since they cannot graduate without passing this test.

September and October can now be used specifically to drive instruction that will result in passing grades for the other students who came so close.

Math is another matter altogether. Some students excel, some don't have enough math background to make sense of Algebra and Algebra II. High school curriculum needs to have a more basic class for those students who do not belong in Algebra I their first year in high school while learning a second language.

Any suggestions to help, besides tutors?
