A must for all computer teachers

Post by txsidewinder » Tue Apr 06, 2004 4:59 am

I am coming here to impart some interesting information. I wish you had a general subject page, but you do not.

I belong to a help forum. Not too long ago, a computer repair man was asking for help. He was having system crashes in the classroom. When he got into the program, he found teachers computers and the kids computers filled with viruses. I do not know how many of you have access to the internet or how many kids have access to the internet. The last school district I worked for had 100% of the kids on the internet. This excluded kindergarden and first grade. But from the second grade on, the kids were on the internet.

I got to thinking about this computer repairman and how he, at first, tried to put the blame on the teachers. Later, he found out his own computer was infected with viruses. This is not the school tearchers falut.

How many of you have firewalls or other protection on the school computers? If they were like the school district I was in, probably none except what came with the computer and is never updated. However, I am sure that a bunch of you are familiar with spyware and viruses and know how to protect the computers. A lot of down time can be saved with school computers since they are causing 60% of all system crashes. As with the person I mentioned before, he did not know what to do. We guided him and tried to help him, but he never answered our inquieres and I do not know if he used the simple method of protection.

If you can access all computers in you classroom, this is simple. If you do not have access, this will take time. All one has to do is download two anti-spy ware programs. They are free and do not take much time to load. If you have access to all computers, you can run this from the main computer and clean up the computers in the classroom at the end of the day or even the beginning of the day. If you do not have access, then every computer in the room would have to be downloaded on at a time. You also then fact the danger of unintentional eraser of the program.

The two programs I am talking about are "Adaware 6" and "Spybot." To download these programs, just put one program at a time into "search." All you do is just put the names down and press "enter." In the instance of access all computers, you only have to download one time. Those without access, only you know. If you keep these programs updated, you will eliminate a lot of pop-up problems, spam, etc. Spyware is where you get all of these porn sites that keep coming up, and if you spot one and the kid tells you he did not go looking for it, you have to be the judge on that. You can also get free firewall protection on the internet, by going to http://www.safer-networking.org , http://www.wilders.org/freetools.htm : http://www.321download.com/lastfreeware/ . There are plenty more out there. Look at the above for links to other free computer sites and they will lead you to them. This also goes for your personal computers. I have a sister in law that has a masters degree in English and ran her own department for over 10 years before retiring. She barely can get on the internet and I am sure that some of you have the same problem. However, if you follow these threads and keep updated, you will help yourselves from being blamed for something that is not you fault.

I'm not quite sure what your point is. I agree that it's necessary to have anti-virus software on school computers (and home computers as well). The two programs you mention don't have anything to do with virus protection as far as I can see, and none of the three URL's you gave are working links.

The point is to download protection. One of the sites is under .dos attack right now. I just went to the site and found out. The other one for free tools, you have to click home. I am going to have to check on Wilders.org. I may have added something or put something wrong. .dos attacks are illegal. The site is in Germany, so the companies like eUniverse.com, doubleclick.net, and several other companies think they can attack these sites. These sites are doing so well against spyware, that spy companies think they have to attack them in this manner. Since the man works with the German Govt., I believe the attacks will be over soon.

Dos attacks are massed e-mail against one site. They take infected computers and send this e-mail through these infected computers. They can do this even if the computer is turned off. All that has to be done is send a command through the phone line and the computer starts sending. This is why many of us are going to teachers and whoever can help us end this problem, plus give free help. These spyware companies do not care who you are or what you do with your computer or a companies computer. Last year, businesses lost over 9 billion dollars due to spyware. I know of one school district that lost all of their computers for over a week. You have to clean one computer at a time. This means that you have to take every download, every file, every shared file, everything, off the computer and restart again. If you have lesson plans on your computer, you need a back-up disk or you lose everything. This is what security on the computers mean. To protect your files. Unfortunately, there are people out there who love to destroy things.

I hope this clears up any questions that you had. For wilders go to:

http://www.wilders.org This will take you to the location. Click Free Tools and you will be there. I was just there.

What I did was set computers to "ask before installing software" in Explorer and then taking a screenshot of the screen that pops up, and teaching people to always click "no."

Thanks Super H

Guess that was meant to be on the lighter side. But I wouldn't mind knowing how to take a screen shot. Might prove to be a usefull tool preparing material to work on. A good idea, on a serious note. Thanks for your help.

For screen shots, on a Mac you can use command shift 3 or command shift 4 for a piec of the screen (you then have to put a box around it).

For the pc, there is usually a "print screen" button on the keyboard that take a picture of the entire screen. It puts the picture on the clipboard so if you open a program like paint, you can paste and it will paste the picture. At least that's the method I have used to get screen shots for my computer material. I have a Mac at home, but have to use a PC at school.

On PC you can press the 'print screen' (sometimes it need SHIFT).

Then go to your Word or Powerpoint, or other and press 'CTRL' and 'V' to paste into document, ppt, etc. Cutting out the need to go to clipboard.

Uh, the ctrl+V takes it off the "clipboard." I thought that was the name used for storing whatever you copy. There is never a "need" to "go" to the clipboard as far as I can see, if you are pasting whatever you just copied.

Sori Lori

I miss read your post. 2am here at the time.

Sometimes people do open the clipboard, and because mentioned clipbard my brain assumed that is what you meant.

My brain thinks, print screen - paste.

But some applications won't give you paste (greyed out) for some operations. This may be where my brain flipped over LOL
If this happens I CNTRL V, which is why I mentioned it. That is probably where my brain jumped to opening the clipboard.

Heh sokay tigertiger, I just don't know anything about opening the clipboard on a PC. I should have added the way to copy and paste, but I didn't think of it.

The initial poster has some valid points. However, the two applications he mentioned are for spyware removal/protection. I have not checked the links but if none of them seem to work I would simply download them from a reputable site such as www.download.com.

If you would like a free AV solution you can download AVG from:

http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus- ... 20142.html

Again, from download.com.

I would be carefull about downloading security products from ANY third party websites that are not directly linked to the software developers in some way. Better yet. You can even download them from the original developers websites. Just takes a little use of google.
