Passive verb list?

Post by Johnysuth » Fri Oct 16, 2015 9:27 pm

I was kind of surprised to find that such a thing doesn't exist (At least I haven't been able to find it). So, I've started creating my own. More precisely, I'm looking for verbs that are commonly used in passive constructions that relate to a specific theme or situation. For example, the office: Hired, fired, laid off, promoted, demoted, held (meeting), given...

I'd appreciate any input whether it's a theme or a list of verbs.

You can find reasonably representative starter lists in decent grammars (such as the COBUILD English Grammar, section 10.18 etc), and more comprehensive ones especially by searching the CD-ROMs that are nowadays sold along with print editions of advanced learner dictionaries (for example, from the 'Grammar - usually passive' field of the Advanced Search of my 2003 Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary's CD-ROM, I have just got up a list that contains almost 350 verbs, which I've pasted in below. You'll obviously need to be selective and do a bit of work to organize it thematically, but the current online CALD should still largely tally with the given entries and senses).

Welcome to the forums, by the way!
