Can someone help me find a grammar book?

Post by Roni » Thu Jun 02, 2005 10:10 pm

Hello,

I'm about to fly out to Japan to teach English and I need a grammar book, British English specifically. I've been looking in a few shops and found a few books, the Longman's A-Z one looked pretty decent, they had the Oxford one as well and I figured since I had the OED already it might be good to have with it.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. :D

Thanks in advance.

There's a thread below this one, called "A good reference", that you might find helpful; there has also been a bit of discussion about which grammar books are best over on the International Forums:

The Longman A-Z (by Leech et al, in a Second Edition now, right?) is pretty good, but I'm not sure if I'd buy it in preference to Swan's PEU (I suspect the latter is that bit more comprehensive); that being said, I've liked what I've read of Leech's take on e.g. the verb phrase, so if you do decide to get the Longman I doubt if you'll be (too  ) disappointed!
