High School/College Students in Ghana

I am stuck as to how best to get this level of students to stop making basic errors. Puctuation, sentence structure and simple agreement seem to be problems that run throughout the students. I am teaching one-on-one lessons to the weakest students and i think their main problem is that they are always speaking english but not reading it. I can't force them to read though, i can't sit there and watch tham so of them are basically the same age as me and so they would find it very patronising.

has anyone else been in this situation?
