Tech's role -teacher-student understanding despite lang bar.

How can we assess WHO the student is when she does not speak the same language as her teacher?

Currently students entering US schools take a home language survey and according to the results may take language dominance, proficiency, intelligence and/or content area assessments.

While the data derived from such instruments may prove helpful, information about who the student is may be of even greater importance. Such information however can be difficult to get especially if the student and teacher share no common language.

I am interested in hearing ways teachers think technology might help newly arrived non English speaking students communicate who they are to their teachers and classmates.

If there were a way to get the information, what type of things would be most beneficial to you as a teacher? Interests, family background...? What do you do currently? What do teachers do now?
