Applying the rules in the moment

Post by Deborah B » Wed Nov 22, 2006 4:46 pm

My student has expressed a need for tools to assist to help with thinking on her feet when it comes to implementing pronunciation rules. We have worked a lot on phonemes and their respective tongue-positioning, and now of course, it is a matter of practice... but also, is there not some general orientation of mind that can help a speaker recall the mechanics? For example, there are mental representaions that personify phonemes can help, like /w/ can be thought of as an opening toward the next sound vs. the restrictive and haughy /g/, although this is not as practical as she or I would like.

This does seem to come down to practice only- practice until it becomes more natural. But there is a need here for some sort of structure to that practice, a sort of plan of action. Any ideas?

Thank you for any who respond for your time and energy!
