Why not present perfect is used in quoted part: Since she met some disabled young girls at college, she "got to thinking" about creating movies that tell people more about their world. MY teacher told me that present perfect should be used when "since" is used. e.g I have studied English for 3 years since 2003. Moreover, what does "got to thinking" mean exactly?

You have posted in the Teacher Forums, but usually teachers post here asking for advice from other teachers. One might be helpful and answer your question, but you will have much better luck if you post in the Student Forums instead. There is a forum called, "Help Center" where teachers go specifically to answer questions like yours. I'm sorry I can't move it there automatically. I suggest you try that forum. There are lots of interesting questions answered there all the time.
