What are some of the big difficulties with learning English pronunciation?

How do you deal with them?

Prounciation issues

Post by Rp » Mon Oct 13, 2008 4:10 pm

Hello:

Not to put too fine a point on it, some of the "biggest" issues with prounciation relate to the first language and how the student "hears" the L2. From a linguistic approach, there are a number of techniques which should help remediate "sounding" issues....but remember it is often how they "hear" the language that impacts their acquisition skills.

Many students will keep keep their accent as a way to honour their culture.

I have found Avery's book " Teaching American English Proununciation" quite helpful.

Thanx

Common pronunciation

Post by eslweb » Wed Oct 15, 2008 11:53 am

Well the biggest problems I came across time and time again were:
Th, y and j, sh and ch, l and r and b and p. I said them so many times that I put together some little Flash Apps for students to listen and practice. One dear Japanese girl practiced with it for three months, but she did get the difference between l and r in the end....

The resources are at:

I hope it saves your voice too...
