English for non-English speaking seniors
Have any of you taught English classes to non-English speaking seniors? If you have, what textbooks did/do you use? Thanks!
Seniors like reflecting on their lives, sharing stories
Two of my best classes were conversation classes at Santa Monica Community College with senior citizens.
During those two semesters, I developed several conversation worksheets of questions, proverbs, and quotations for my classes. The discussions were lively since seniors like reflecting on their lives and sharing stories. We had a great time!
I've recently expanded my lessons and conversation worksheets into a book titled Compelling Conversations: Questions and Quotations on Timeless Topics. Go to www.compellingconversations.com for free sample chapters. You will find that seniors appreciate the cultural references and open up when given the opportunity.
Good luck.
