Are "son" / "sun" omophones in SSE?

Post by supermario » Mon Oct 22, 2007 9:22 pm

Hi all,

I am a non native English teacher and I would be very grateful if you could help me with a query regarding the Scottish accent.

I know the "wedge" (i.e. /\) does not exist in Scottish Standard English, so I would like to ask if the following words in the Scottish accent are omophones: son / sun.

And also what about these other words, are they pronunced with the same vowel sound:

serve / bird / work / turn

Thanks in advance.
