What are some good writing textbooks for children (8 yrs old)?

Can children be taught writing that young?

I don't know if there are any texts, but you could have students write more than one sentence describing a picture, then show them how to make a good paragraph with these. Or they could write about something that happened. Start with short, 3-5 sentence writings, then have them increase the length as they learn more words. This works in first grade, and should also work in ESL.
