Hey,

I plugged NDI Nanjing into the search engine and didn't get any helpful hits. If anyone knows any information regarding the New Dynamic Institute in Nanjing, please respond! They've offered me a teaching position, but I want to get some feedback before making a decision. And I've heard all of the pros/cons of a language school, I'm pretty much just looking for specific information on NDI Nanjing. Thanks! Hope someone can help and that I can later return the favor with my limited knowledge Smile

Do you have contact details of previous employees? If not, ask for them and email the teachers to see what they think.

This check with previous teachers doesn't work in China things get listened to here and read. I was tricked by a teacher who was being let go. He lied to get a settlement from the school.

I just visited a New Dynamics Institute and I was quite impressed. My friend said that he makes 8,000 to 10,000 RMB per month for working 20 to 25 hours per week. he has two days a week off and his classes normally start at 2 in the afternoon. He has 3 to 5 English Corners/Salons per week and the students are eager to learn English, although they seemed a bit quiet. They had to pay 500 RMB per class, although, listening, English Corner and movie classes are free. Many wanted to go abroad for further study. My friend teaches BEC English classes, what a waste of time and money, but we know how China loves certificates and a few courses in Shanghai translation. They gave him his visa and work permit and also 1,300 RMB towards rent in an up and coming third tier city. Go and observe some classes and then decide. Best of luck. YDD

Yes. I interviewed with them a couple of times. I enjoyed a cordial relationship with the interviewer. Never worked there. Actually, they may have been just trying to get my contact information. I received calls from them, after the interview, not for a job, but to accompany their students on a field trip.

The school itself is a state of the art facility in a very expensive location. It's a big place. They must have a fantastic overhead. No doubt impressive to many of the students.

They required office hours, a deal killer for me. A young man they hired was an impressive guy. They have been around for a while; however, the obviously steep overhead would concern me. Seems like the kind of place that could close overnight without salaries paid.

If you don't mind office hours and the place is financially sound, might be a good place to get started. They have a syllabus to follow, so you can get some good ideas for the future.

Not referring to the Nanjing location. I haven't been there.

Actually I was most specifically curious about their Dalian facility.

It kind of baffles me sometimes to hear people talk about things like office hours as if they're optional... often in my job search they are seeming inescapable.

I also refuse to work office hours and have declined more than a few jobs because of it. Office hours certainly are optional. You have every right to tell a prospective employer "no thanks" or to ask to have them removed from the contract.

Office hours do not mean the same thing across the board though so you should inquire a bit.

I will say I believe office hours are becoming more and more common. Frankly, I believe anyone who accepts a 35-40ish hour work week with the pay of a 20-25 hour week is a bloody fool or desperate or both.

Outside of the question of the hours in the week (since clearly the employers think of teaching hours and office hours as separate parts of your total work week), what monthly pay rate are you saying that only a fool would settle for (in China)?

If the school is going to pay you for teaching 18 hours a week and then expects you to sit in the office for free, don't do it. You won't be just sitting there. You will be doing some kind of work, otherwise, what's the point? Even your presumably white face is worth something.

Chinese employers, in general, are thugs. There are some good jobs around. I have one, thank God. Great support staff, supportive environment, good pay. My situation was dutifully paid for through years of dealing with people who, in the USA, would be considered two bit gangsters.

The market has changed, no doubt. If you just need a job, go back to school and learn something which will get you a job in the USA.
