There is an agency based out of Hangzhou, Bin Jiang area, called Echo Education. They "place" teachers in the area. AVOID them. I worked for them for two months. I quit my job, and my passport was confiscated by them just before I was supposed to get it. They extorted money from me, forced me to pay rent, and was forced to pay for a new exit visa. Be very careful.

The supervisor who confiscated my passport for three weeks was Cindy Lai. Her email is "Cindy.Lai" <[email protected]>. Her number is +86 159 688 399 34. Her supervisor is named Danni Ni: danny.ni <[email protected]>. Another employee of theirs is Cloris: Her number is + 86 137 5716 3167.

Also, the school they "placed" me at, was Greentown Ruling Middle school, in Hangzhou. The FAO there is Ding Wei. After I quit, he extorted rent from me while Echo confiscated my passport. His email is 丁蔚 <[email protected]>. His number is +86 138 5713 9367.

How did this happen? A call to an American embassy would have resulted in your passport being relinquished. Why did your school have your passport in the first place?

fb,

I obviously don't know the circumstances of your situation, but horror stories like yours crop up from time to time. I certainly saw them when I was considering coming to this place. What I learned, and I think all newbies should learn, is go with something safe like a uni job at 5-8K per month and then figure out how this place works once you are here.

Seconded.

Go for the experience first, get some Chinese language under your belt, figure out how to proceed, make your plan, and then begin hustling and go! go! go! to get dat sweet wheelbarrow of da dosh.

Seems similar to the infamous Hangzhou Helen and her many tricks.
Here is a thread with many other people having similar comments and complaints:

Echo English has plenty of bad reviews online. Why would you consider working with them?
