This is the one gig you NEVER want to do. Don't even think about it.
IH have added bait and switch to its bag of nasty tricks. You will be offered by e mail from someone called Umar contracts with an excellent package. When you arrive in KSA however, the contract you will be given will show an entirely different figure, about SR 10,000 lower than what you thought and were led to believe you would be getting.
The teachers are unqualified Arabs, eastern europeans and the like happy to slave for 3,000 riyals. I agree with Beast, Al Qhutani who is the director has destroyed International House's reputation and as Beast said, "It has gone down the toliet."
IH is a hell, the worst hell in Saudi Arabia and never ever give your passport to Al Quhatani or you will be treated worse than a slave. |

No No No...the place is wonderful...wonderful. Far better than ..say..America.
Just ask ** and ********....not to mention good old ******** holed up in New Mexico.
You've got it all wrong buddy,....we're bad (with the aforementioned exceptions). Saudis are the salt of the earth....And their tomatoes taste so much better.
Happy Fourth of July, folks! |

I think the key for happiness in Saudi is to get on with a Western company so you don't usually have pay/contract issues.

I am happy with my US staffing company which employs me to work for the Saudi military, which pays the bills. My previous Saudi company, before the US one won the contract, was so corrupt that they pocketed over 20% of my authorized salary. That's a fact. The US one restored what's rightfully mine. |

Yes, I should have been clearer. A company that is still controlled directly/indirectly by Western corporate interests such as Booz*Allen, Raytheon/SALTS, British Aerospace, etc. IH IS a Western franchise but is sold out to locals around the world and so, the conditions will vary based on the integrity of said locals.

Dear Georgetowner,
Gee, I deeply regret offending you by having been fortunate enough to have worked for a good employer and by actually (gasp) having enjoyed my job in Saudi.
I realize that this means I must be really weird and certainly deranged.
Are you in Saudi? Have you ever been there? If the answer to either of those is "Yes," I'm sorry that you had/are having such a bad experience.
But though I'm sure it will be hard, maybe impossible, for you to believe, your personal experience can't be generalized to cover everyone else's.
Neither can mine - which is why I don't try to tell posters here that ". . . the place is wonderful...wonderful. Far better than ..say..America."
As you noted I'm in NM (though not "holed up.") And I'm enjoying myself immensely here, far, far more than I ever did in the Kingdom. Being in Saudi made that possible.
Sorry it didn't/hasn't worked put that way for you.
Regards,
John |

Scot, Jon Slat, Stephen Jones, Veiled, Cleo, Beast etc etc etc have more or less said in their own way that Saudi is what you make it and that much depends on having the right background, qualifications and basic drive to be here in the first place-which is then rounded out by hooking up with a reputable employer.
More folks are getting pulled into IH's pathetic lies, promised high salaries and once off the plane getting slammed with the TRUTH- and boy oh boy- the truth is nasty. This cockroach Al Quhatni has a long long rap sheet.
Of the said posters noted above, has one, just one, ever recommended IH-even for the most inept, or happy go lucky?
No. |

Dear Markemark,
I wouldn't recommend IH anywhere - except perhaps for pancakes.

I can't recall anyone ever saying anything good about IH on this board. The regular posters who have spent years in Saudi have consistently advised to take great care about who your "master" is...
Come to think of it... having read this board since it started back in the 90s, I don't recall anyone ever saying that Saudi is "wonderful."

Dear veiledsentiments,
I don't know - there were a lot of things about the Kingdom that made me wonder - according to this meaning:
"place in doubt or express doubtful speculation, a feeling of puzzlement"
In that respect, Saudi often filled me with "wonder."
Regards,
John |

One would do well to avoid working for an IH unless as an entry-level position. Some of the European franchises are fine for dedicated post-CELTA teachers requiring a few years of initial experience. However, opting for an IH located in Saudi is sheer lunacy, IMO. |

Markemark, thanks for continuing to warn people about this institution. After all, that's what this forum is about: saving people from the really scary jobs. |

The teachers there are pleasant enough. I met a few of them before I left Jubail. They aren't on great salaries and mostly look outwards as they near the end of their contracts. Has anyone actually lodged a complaint with International House HQ? |
