Ok, I might bring on a lot of verbal attacks, but I have searched for comments about pay for King Abdulaziz University and it seems people want to argue about minute issues to show who knows more than the others. I have looked at previous posts, but I mostly see constant debating.

I have been sent an email from KAU expressing a desire for an interview.

Can someone please provide me with the average pay for EFL Instructors or what is the highest that can be expected. I have an MS in education, CELTA, and just over 5 years experience in the Gulf plus a sixth year in Korea. I am just asking for rough estimates on how much total pay (pay and housing) I can expect.

Thanks for any info you can provide.

There seems to be a lot of that going around. Pissing contests, that is. At times it's hard to see what the real info is there is so much bickering. If there is any real info to be found, that is.

I don't know if it will help, but I'll post what my experience with KAU:

I had an offer earlier this year for around 14,000 in a complete package, but I have 4 years' experience teaching in colleges, a BA in English, and a TESOL. You'd definitely command higher. Also, know that this was through an agency, an agency that wanted me to pull a runner and report to KAU on very short notice.

If you're offered through an agency the figure won't be comparable.

I believe the problem is that salaries are low for expats at most Saudi universities but they have a certain discretion as to supplements. So somebody else's pay may not be useful when judging yours

My offer is for the The English Language Institute of KAU. A representative of the ELI emailed me. Does anyone know of the ELI. It doesn't sound like a recruiter.

I guess nothing is certian but it's always good to hear from people and actual figures are helpful. RE; agency vs direct. I went to the KAU website and looked at the wages they offer and when I got my contract to work for KAU through an agency (ISM) they gave me the same deal Smile

Hi, I've been offered a job at more that 12,000, if that is helpful. I must say the website for KAU suggests that the most one can earn is a little less than that, but as I say I have been offered more.
Now, as to my problem. I was offered a job a few weeks ago and the last I heard was 4 weeks ago. I have emailed different people in the school but received no reply. I have tried phoning but received no answer whilst the email address shown on the web page meets with nowt but a failure to delivery notice. I have spoke to a friend of mine in Saudi who states I shouldn't worry and that the authorities can be very lax. I also appreciate it is Ramadhan. But surely they would be expecting me by early October and when one thinks of visa, medical etc......;
So, if anyone (probably working at the university) could give me some insight into whether the university is closed and that I should just wait OR that maybe I should just forget about the job altogether - (regular doom merchants please feel free to give full vent to your needs).
This is a reputable University and I find it hard to believe that they would not just simply tell me that they didn't want me;(yet more grist for the doom merchants).
Thanks in advance and good look to the original poster.

Here's a hint to save us English teachers the embarrassment of... um... typos. Up in the right hand corner of each of your posts there is a button that says "edit." Cool

If you are fast, you can get it fixed before anyone reads it.

I suspect your friend is correct.

It's not so much that the 'authorities' are 'lax' - I've actually found them to be as efficient as beaurocracies in other parts of the world, all things considered. It's more that Saudis tend not to be great at planning things in advance and don't feel any sense of urgency until things really are... urgent. Nor do they feel the need to keep people informed of the progress of their application etc. Also, as you say, it's now Ramadhan and that definately slows things down as working hours are shorter.

So, annoying and stressful though it may be, the best thing for you is to be patient. I know from experience that insisting on prompt answers and trying to speed things up rarely works. It may be that you will arrive in Jeddah a week or two late. No big deal - it happens all the time.

The big deal is that they'll probably pro-rata your holiday pay, you won't have the two years necessary for ESB if you leave after the contract is over, and most important of all you'll be spending a lot of time unpaid.

what they'll offer you may not be the actual amount they advertising. I've been called in again, as i rejected their initial offer of 12k. Feel its too little for my qualifications and expereince.
