I have read posts about acting/modeling gigs in Japan. I am wondering if you need to be situated in Tokyo to do this, or if opportunities are all over the country. How would one get involved in such work?
I am looking to supplement my income and I thought it might be fun to try. I have the blonde hair, blue eye, fair skin look going on and I heard there is a market for that type of look.
Any suggestions? |

I heard there are only three modeling agencies that handle foreigners in Japan. this is on eof them

You would need a professional portfolio with evidence of work you have done, as well as the right visa. |

Looks like most work is done is Tokyo. To far for me  I will keep my eyes and ears open for opportunities when I get to Japan. |

Hmmm
I'd think it depends on the work you wanted to do if you mean serious acting and modelling work then what PH says is true but if you just want to do extras and bit work then there are opportunities around. Be warned that biggest obstacle to 'supplementing my income" is finding time to do the modelling work while holding down a proper job. Not all shoots happen on the weekend and you might spend all day hanging around scratching your butt for about half an hour in front of the camera. |

Ya, I'm not looking to get into it seriously or anything. Lets be honest, if I could be a model or actress, I would do it here in Canada. I can see how it would be tricky to sqeeze in work on a f/t schedual. might not be worth the money, what with all the wasted time and potential travel costs. This is more complicated then I had first thought. |

Your other problem is that if you have an instructor visa, legally you can not do other paid employment outside language teaching. You may have trouble getting hired by an agency if you dont have the correct visa for doing those jobs. You may have the qualifications and experience but immigration doesnt take kindly to moonlighting on visas and it could cause problems for the agency to hire you. |

Yeah, it's hard to say whether the odd job would cause you problems with immigration or not. True -- opportunities exist: a Brazilian friend of mine got his foot in the door just by fluke... He tried out and got the part. Now you can see him on coffee commercials across Japan (I don't know if they are still airing them or not, as I don't watch much Japanese TV).
As for immigration? I think they are too starstruck... They're probably like, "Oh look! It's the coffee guy from TV! Coooool!" But I wouldn't count on that as an adequate safeguard against the consequences of not having the correct visa. |

A couple of my friends are doing acting work sporadically in between teaching.
One was in the last Godzilla movie and the other is currently playing a hyphen.

Not a great deal of work around but expect to pick up a couple of gigs a year. Pay is about 150,000/300,000 for an ad. Not bad for a days work. |

If you are ready to throw all dignity out the window, raise the bar for foreigner stereotypes, and also have a proper entertainer visa, WHV, dependent visa, spouse visa, or student visa (modelling gigs on an instructor or humanities visa is illegal), then you, too, can be a model.

In the Metropolis Classifieds - http://metropolis.co.jp/ - there's always some people looking for models. They say no pay, but you'll get the prints.
Although, whenever I read it, I think it's some perverted old Japanese fellow, rather than a pro or even a student building his or her portfolio. |
