I recently had the experience of being invited to someones house for a breakfeast of Natto that he eats every morning. He is in great health and 62 so it must be very nutricious.

As I was stirring the Natto as instructed, I felt the gag reflex surface and tried with all my might not to smell what I was about to eat mixed with rice and a healthy portion of soy sauce and kim chee.

My question for those who are experienced in living in Japan is can anyone enjoy eating a nice bowl of Natto for breakfeast?

Mmmm...hmmmm...had a portion out of the styrophone packet when I got home from work. It took over 13 years before trying it, love it now.

That one you had sounded scrumcious!

Any swell there? Going off here.

I absolutely love the stuff!!!! I can't get enough of it. I especially like it with nori. mmm! mmm! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

I admit, though, I did not like it the first few times. The change came when I stopped thinking of it as beans, cuz when I though of it as beans my mouth always got ready for a spicy chili bean taste or a sweet pork and beans tatste. Once I got over that and I opened my mouth and mind to a delicious new taste.

Don't give up yet! Wink

Natto is food of the gods!

At first I found it too neba neba - gooey. But you learn the chopstick swirly technique, where you kinda wave the glob of natto about in the air like a close up magician brandishes his wand and voila! Natto behaves well, stays on chopsticks and the blob, kimchi, seaweed, rice and all, makes it to your mouth with the least amount of mess.

At the kaiten sushi joint in Kabukicho (cheap!) I always get natto maki last. It's the flourish I like at the end of my sushi repast.

I love natto maki sushi! I am allergic to shellfish, and not a huge fan of many kinds of raw fish, so this was a lovely find for me.

I know, but I also like things like kimchee, blue cheese, cheese in a spray can, and all kinds of stinky salami. I have a good Japanese friend who turns green at the sight of natto, but it's really nice. it tastes kind of nutty.

I will combatte and try again if it:s offered. I think the Japaneese guy was very amused by my reacation, but I hope I get a second chance.

For Sweetsee who asked the swell was pretty meager even though a Typhoon hit. I went yesterday and the surf was extremely small but it was great getting in the water.

Thanks for the replies,
Eric

yeah, natto's awesome, but it took a while to build up the courage (especially when one summer I left a pot of chick peas soaking for a day too long - hey, I was busy ok? - and it turned into chick pea natto - well maybe not, but it smelled like it and the smell stayed with me for months).

AS a vegetarian, natto with okara, tofu, garlic, negi and ginger as a substitute gyoza filling rocks.

If you can enjoy cheese, you can enjoy natto.

I love natto. I love cheese, especially gorgonzola. Kimchi is wonderful (but not everyday).

I didn't enjoy natto the first time I ate it. I thought it was horrible. Then I got used to it. Now I love it. It's an acquired taste, like coffee, beer, and cheese.

If you go into something expecting to hate it, it's really hard to like it in the end.
