As we all know (who has been to the magic kingdom) the "rules" are, at times, not enforced. The best advice I can offer is to be the most open-minded, patient and flexible person you can be while in the Middle East. I have the so-called blue passport, but a lot of us Yanks try to compare the world with all its rich and divisive cultures to how we do things in the USA. Big mistake! Relax, take a deep breath and grab life by the balls! Gee, I used way too many quotation marks. Shocked

Rules for survival in KSA:

1) A smile and a sense of humor will get you more than all the yelling and demanding in the world.

2) Accept those offers of coffee and dates even if you hate coffee and dates

3) Spend time building rapport with your students and the Saudis that you work for. Your students want to know that they can trust you as a person. They will only respect you after they learn to like you.

Dear Mia,

Very true - I would add only:

1) A smile, courtesy/politeness, and a sense of humor will get you more than all the yelling and demanding in the world.

2) Accept those offers of coffee anddates even if you hate coffee and dates.
And accept those Qurans and Islamic pamphlets with a smile and a thank you. Be flattered, not annoyed. That means they like you enough to want to save your soul.

Regards,
John
