I'm looking to try teaching abroad after this New Years, but would prefer a shorter (6 month or less) contract.
Any ideas?
I have a BA, and would much prefer to avoid big cities. |

Depends a bit, of course, on where you want to go - and your qualifications, but some good options are at www.TEFLtemp.com
Good list of paid and volunteer possibilities. |

You may be eligible for a working holiday visa, depending on your age and the country you choose. Looking for short-term work in some places will not be profitable because of setup costs. Help us to help you. Where exactly would you like/not like to go? |

Asia is a pretty big area. Could you be a little more specific?
And, how much of those short term jobs actually sponsor work visas? Very few in Japan. |

China, Korea, and Taiwan. And they usually have camp jobs as well. Thailand might be a possibility. |

Are you saying that in all of those countries, you can get short-term work plus a work visa? |

If you have at least 3-5 years teaching experience, then there are some possibilities here in the Gulf. I have seen 6 month contracts being advertised in Saudi, Qatar and Kuwait. Some do not require an MA. |

I don't have much in the way of teaching experience. I've been volunteering in a few classrooms the last couple of months, but I've never had a class myself.
I'm 23, and I haven't taken any courses directly related to teaching.
Places of interest? Certainly South America, though with me going to be in England in January, maybe Eastern Europe or even Asia would make more sense. I'd be happy in any Eastern European country I can think of, most Asian ones (my concerns are political stability [ie lack thereof]) and overly industrialised or polluted places). |

Most decent language schools in Central/Eastern European countries will require you to have a TEFL certificate from a reputable course. In this context, 'reputable' means 100+ hours on-site, and including supervised teaching practice on real students. There are lots of such courses around - Prague, in particular, is a training centre mecca. This is simply what the vast majority of newbies in the market in this area have, and no cert or an online cert is a drawback when you are competing on the job market.
So far as the six-month contract issue, there are always teachers who don't return after the holiday break, and there are openings available January - June. Very little work available July-August, for anyone. |
