I have searched online for some time now. I am looking for an ESL job at any Uni, but as an experienced tennis pro, I think a sports Uni is a good fit.

I will take any Uni job, but I really don't know what I'm doing as far as searching goes. Unfortunately, I have very limited internet access. I am running a tennis camp in the middle of the woods in Maine. I was hoping to line something up and head to China Aug 10 when I'm done here.

It's a technology free camp, so I can only access the internet after 1030 pm USA EST when the kids are sleeping. I could do Skype interviews etc after thst.

Any other info on recruiters or anything else is greatly appreciated.

I have 2 passport photos, a passport, and original of my degree, a BA in Sociology. No TEFL.15 years as a tennis pro teaching children and adults.

I have heard I can get my visa through a paid service.

Can I get it done in time?

Thanks everyone, and sorry for all the questions.

If you are hoping to begin next semester (September) then I would not be limiting yourself by applying only to sports universities at this point. You are already quite far behind in the game, and most (decent) schools will have their teachers lined up already, as they will be going on summer holiday shortly (usually mid-July) and not returning until mid-August. You might be able to pick up something late August/early September when schools have a few no-shows but at this point, getting your CV out there to as many places as possible is key. Also dig out jobs on expat forums in cities that interest you etc., most of them will have places where schools can post recruitment ads.

We did all this before--you like tennis, but need to be coming over here looking at being an English teacher. Most universities will have tennis courts where you could pick up games or perhaps even a bit of coaching. But at this point, limiting your search to a few sports schools will likely mean not finding any work.

Here is a general university list, no idea if the links are actually any good: http://www.findaschool.org/index.php?Country=China.

Yeah, I'm strictly interested in teaching English at this point. I just thought that a sports Uni might be interested in a teacher with a sports background. I'm down for anything. So pumped to get to China and meet the students. I just hope I can line something up.
Unfortunately, very limited research time now . I've asked before, but can I fly to someplace out that way, and stay for a few months 'til I get a job? I heard the visa system has changed. Or, could I go someplace like Costa Rica to visit, and get my visa there? China has an embassy there.
Cheers

I've nothing helpful to add, as dean covered what I would have said already. If you make it to Shanghai I'm up for hitting some balls around though.

Don't be doing research now. Get your CV out there, send it to as many schools as possible. In doing so, you will also wind up sending it to recruiters, who at this point can probably help you land something. You have been on these boards long enough that you should probably know what you should look out for in terms of offers etc. If not, read a bit here, there is plenty on it. Do your research on specific places once you start hearing back and getting interviews and offers. Doing the research first will just waste your time.

You can certainly come on a tourist visa, hang around, look for stuff. That is pretty expensive though, as you will need to leave China to apply for your work permit, possibly back home. Living here in the meantime will probably not be cheap, and you are limiting your job search to just one city. Plus a lot of places don't expect you to just turn up--they might for a demo class, but not to hand in the CV. Plus you will need to settle in, and am guessing you don't speak the language. People do this, but not sure it is the best plan.

Can you apply for a work visa from another country--no idea, some you can, some you can't. As the visa rules have just changed, everything is a bit up in the air. In some places the Chinese embassy requires you to have some sort of residency permit within the country in order to apply for a visa for China. If this is the case, you will either need to apply back home or in another country which allows such applications.

You were on these boards asking similar questions back in March or something. Did you just get busy with other things and not apply for anything? Did you get stuck doing 'research' and never start the application process? Or have you been sending your CV around but no schools have been interested? I don't really get why you are where you are at the moment, and you don't seem to have a good strategy in terms of maximising you chances of finding work. You seem to be dithering a bit too much.

For universities you have a couple of weeks window right now, but perhaps are even a bit too late in terms of paperwork coming through before the summer break. You should also be getting things like a criminal background check and medical check in order so that you are good to go when offers do come in, otherwise you might be set back a few weeks trying to sort out this stuff. But most importantly, get your CV out there--on job boards, to schools, whatever.

Although good luck getting anything through at this time of year - most universities have closed for the summer. You might be lucky and snag something from a place which has come up short but being in a non-US country is just going to cause inconvenience.

There is no guarentee that you will teach sports students if you are at a sports university by the way. Do you know anything about how students are admitted to sports universities in China?

Why didn't you just provide the link? It would be more useful to nellychess, or do you just want to try and make yourself look clever?

It's on an excel spreadsheet on my hard-drive.

But yeah, I obviously spend my days thinking of ways to look clever on the internet because I so desperatley need the approval of people I don't know.

Wow, Thanks for the great list. I just assumed that sports Uni students were pursuing a career in sports or phys ed. Am I wrong?

I have a few reasons I am jammed for time. One, I decided to turn down a free trip and 4 week tennis teaching gig, because it turned out to be illegal working. Two, I thought I'd have internet access where I am now. Most of my internet access is through my phone, and 3g, which is not very good, and only for an hour or 2 at night.

If I can't line up a job before I leave, I don't know what I'll do. I have no home base really now. I will have about 6k USD.

I really don't know what I'm going to do.

I've appled to a few jobs on seriousteachers.com. but only Uni's. I have not gotten any responses. I did get one from a recruiter. He has told me nothing except for me to give him all my documents, and to set up a Skype interview. I don't really think it's a good idea to deal with him.

You're probably right, however, I think what GuestBob was referring to was the selection process of Chinese universities.

Unlike the west where students pick majors they have an interest in and actually want to study, in China students are more often than not assigned majors based on their university entrance exam score. Students write down a few universities and different majors. If they get enough points to go to their first choice, great. The majority of students don't. What happens is that the government (or whatever governing body) says, 'Sorry, you didn't get enough points to study XXX at YYY. However, we can offer you CCC at YYY.' The pressure to go to university is so great that students will grab any chance they get.

Over 75% of my students didn't want to study English. I teach English majors.

TLDR: Don't expect, physically fit, motivated athletes of the future.

Of course I could have totally missed GuestBob's point and gone off on a wild tangent...

Not quite, but also yes.

The only exception to the general gaokao rule that only high scoring gets any degree of choice in the whole university admissions process is sports. If you want to study sports then you have to take an additional sports test alongside your regular gaokao exams. Taking the sports test is optional (unless you happen to be six foot tall and dumb as a bag of rocks, then coach is going to be pretty firm about this). Sports students tend to be more motivated - but this is in relation to their major, not the CET (which, since 2005, has been officially decoupled from graduation requirements so good luck finding a sports college that wants to pay for a NET).

Never knew that, you learn something every day. Just wish the rest of the majors operated like this...
