You asked about Ukraine as well as about Russia and in my opinion you received useful information, e.g. about the relative ease of gaining employment in Kiev and about visas for Americans. It was also suggested to you that you would find more detailed information on the Ukraine board, which you insisted did not exist.

I wasn't upset, but I was unimpressed by your peculiar reaction to my assistance. I think a little more openness to what is said to you will make your time in eastern Europe a lot easier. (And here I speak from experience, my own and other people's; again, largely factual, not sarcasm.)

You might want to really reconsider what you wrote. I unfortunately flamed a member after I mistook thier reply as sarcastic. Was wrong for doing it....but...while I don't reside in Russia, I have travelled there several times...these peeps have thier perspective bang on much more than you can imagine. They are the troops on the ground, and any advice is better than none...or whatever your thoughts are....they can at least give you more guidance than you will get anywhere else...

Having said that, (and if you decide to dismiss these members..), I wish you all the best going over there....like I said...I have been there, and wouldn't go it on my own without these people's opinion...

Be humble.....just a thought.

Yes, I wish you luck too. If you want to ask more questions about Russia, I'm sure I and the others will do our best to come up with useful answers.

I think the 'open-mindedness'' is something newbies can't take to another country - it's something that develops as they get bashed about. Oldhands really want to prevent that from happening but it seems, like kids, they have to do it for themselves.......

I would just say, though, that the 'bashing about' can be particularly rough in Moscow - the rawness of it is something that most British/Americans will have never experienced (I hope).

So, newbies, if yiou can listen, do - cus you are going to come across more than just a bit of offense.....

Just as a quick aside - one of my students here in Bogota recently spent a year living in Moscow. According to him, the 'rawness' and 'bashing about' is quite a bit worse in Bogota than Moscow. Maybe I chose the wrong city...
