Question: What's the furthest distance you have travelled to secure a job interview? Was it worth it?
My answer: While living in Japan, I travelled to Melbourne, Australia to do an interview with the Military Language Institute. It was an insane trip since there was no guarantee I would get the job (it never did work out!). But I was blinded by the idea of working in the Gulf so I did anything.
What's your answer?

I flew from Oregon to London, at my own expense, for an interview once. I got the job and lived to regret it. |

Kuwait University flew me in from the US for an interview. It was certainly worth being able to check things out before accepting... even though it turned out to be a bad decision and I never returned after the first year.
AUS flew me from Kuwait to Dubai for an interview. That didn't turn out because they declared that they wanted an MBA in the interview... even though they knew that I didn't have one before they flew me in. Perhaps that was a hint that I should suggest that I would get one, but no thanks.

Don't ever pay for your trip to your interview. If you have to shell out lots of money to get to an interview, forget about it. I shelled out quite a bit of dough to interview with Nova in San Francisco for a job in Japan. It turned out that they had 2 or 3 openings (there was quite a few interviewees there) and the company went under two weeks later. If you have to pay to get to the interview, they are using you. |

I expect that some didn't even have to leave their chair... what with the computer and telephone in reach.

Skype job interviews are great. I've done so many of them and they've born fruit. Now the decision is...which fruit to eat? |

Hmmm, you going to count going overseas without a set position, looking at ads and then moving to the next location?
If so, I left Seattle, WA for Prague without a clue where I would end up and landed in Kyiv, UA before getting my first PT gig and starting to build from there. No side trips, just stops along the way there. |

Yes, but since this is in the Middle East section... that option is not available in the Gulf. Perhaps in North Africa or the Levant...
