Pattaya (south end, Jomtien beach) is OK. There are several hotels in your price range, are decent and family oriented.
I like the Natural Park Resort.
Lots of Russian families with kids and the rooms are a bit of a walk back from the pool/beach but it is decent. Rates in the 1700thb range and it does include an excellent buffet breakfast.
2 hours, (120THB/person) from BKK by (aircon) bus (eastern bus terminal - BTS station E7 Ekamai). Take a songtaew from the pattaya bus station to the resort (50 thb/person).
You could also go the other way (west) to the other "Gulf coast" but I don't have much experience to share on that route. Hua Hin on the hotel search.
Domestic flights to Phuket are cheap if you want the Andaman sea. That puts Phuket, Krabi and Ko Phi-phi in your reach.

All good advice.
Go a little farther past Pattaya area to get to Koh Samed. Maybe an hour more and nicer beaches. Been a while since Ive been there and I've heard its more expensive and crowded now. Same bus station I believe. Port city is called Ban Phe. Accomm may be more than $25/night for a family though. I would expect 1000-2000 baht ($30-60) would be possible for something decent. Its a small island with not much to do expect hang at the beach or go diving/snorkelling/fishing/etc. Island lifestyle means you pay more for things like food though. Expect to pay 20-50% more for similar dishes in other cities.
A couple hours farther is Koh Chang area which has much nicer beaches and much more of an island atmosphere. The main beach (White Sands) would be nice for a family and should be able to get something in your price range if not a little higher. It takes about 5 hours to get from Bangkok to (Trad) Koh Chang or about 2.5-3 hours from Pattaya. Same bus station. Buses leave regularly (every hour or 2) from what I remember, but go in the early morning to make the most of your time.
Hua Hin is a good option as well, but more expensive from what I hear. Nicer beaches than most in Pattaya area. About 3-3.5 hours to Hua Hin.
Obviously going south is the best option for the best beaches. I think Krabi would be good for a family, but more expensive obviously. Ao Nang would be good for a family and you should be able to find nice accom for 1000-2000 baht ($30-60). Air Asia usually has the best deals.
Good luck and remember that it is still high season so prices will be higher. Come back after March/April and see some prices cut in half. |
