bridgetc: Sorry about the ambiguity in my comment. I completely understood what you meant by 'active recruiting' and I'm glad you enjoy TEFL as much as I do and I can appreciate why you may feel that way about Mexico--I had the good fortune to teach some wonderful Mexicans and S. Americans in Vancouver.
I just found it strange that more than any other overseas region, England had the most recruiters at our on-campus B.Ed career fair a year ago--no doubt, it's the low salary and job satisfaction because England's unemployment, I believe exceeds Canada's. I've heard that if you can survive a London classroom, you can survive anywhere. Therefore, it's not surprising that those wishing to teach in the UK might choose TEFL or int'l schools--hence the disproportionate number of UK TEFLers: this poll shows 30% whereas the UK makes up only 14% of the world's English speaking population based on my previous post.
At the previous American-owned private school I worked for, some of the most senior foreigner staff were from England. Nothing sinister about them. |

I wasn't expecting a big surprise when I put in my two cents. I didn't get one. Precisely what I expected. About half from the good ole USA. |

I did a rough calculation based on current pop stats. As I suspected, and especially given the fact at least a 1/3 of Canadians are not native English speakers, it makes Canada the most overly represented country in TEFL and possibly in int'l school teaching.
USA: 312,833,000 = 72% (of the total of these 5)
UK: 62,300,000 = 14%
Can: 34,605,346 = 8%
Aus: 22,800,812 = 5%
NZ: 4,432,800 = 1% |
But by my estimate, our current poll figure of 45% US representation is roughly 25% less than the US's % of the English-speaking world. Anyone care to speculate on this? |

US citizens are less inclined to travel overseas - only 30% have passports. In terms of overseas travel/work potential, this effectively reduces the US population to about 94 million - more or less in line with our little survey. |

That's probably the same for Canadians, or at least until Homeland Security made border crossings feel more like immigration interviews. |

Actually, I found stats that indicate 53% of Canadians own passports. They do go places other than the US....and I think they are very strongly represented in the TEFL works, despite the overall many fewer numbers of Canadians who exist
(There are 'only' about 33.5 million Canadians, so it would see that they TEFL at far higher rates than USAisns do).

Thinking about my TEFL friends and colleagues in Mexico City, most of them are Canadian. |

I'm from Ireland. So far there's only 3 votes for "other anglophone countries", I'm curious to know where the other 2 voters are from! |

When I worked in Korea (back in '97-'99) I was surprised at the number of Canadians - IMO certainly representing the highest proportion of TEFLers there at that time. Waaaay more Canadians than Brits for sure. I'd be interested to know if this has changed since. |

Thanks - it would be interesting to have a larger base of data. |
