Akeelah and the Bee

Lovely inspirational film about a girl from South Los Angeles who enters the spelling bee. The teenagers I watched it with were completely engaged, as was I!

Thank you for suggesting this.

I downloaded (hey, it's not illegal here) and watched it last night because, in an Islamic country, I had to make sure it would be completely appropriate. And it was!

So, today, I showed it to my 7th and 8th grade English classes. Thematically, it fits with "overcoming obstacles," the unit they are just finishing up. It also shows the application of what I been teaching: if you know lots of little words, it will help you understand big words, certainly in a way much more exciting than prefixes, root words, and suffixes.

Boys and girls both loved it.

Not only that, they'd never heard of a Spelling Bee and want to have spelling competitions, so, of course, this is what we will do. How can I say no?

Again, thank you!

One of my faves, Cool Runnings (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cool_Runnings), is age-appropriate. It's based on the true story of the first Jamacian bobsled team trying to make it to the winter Olympics. It's a laid back, feel-good Disney flick with upbeat music and likeable characters. Moreover, it shows how determination can overcome major obstacles. It's very easy to follow along and the Jamaican dialect (fake and real) shouldn't be too much of a challenge. Here's a YouTube clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUprJqP8Phw -- the whole movie is available on YouTube in parts.

Breaking Away is good, too.

Here's the trailer:

But I think it's available free on download sites.

A fun movie -and again, it's about overcoming obstacles (and growing up.)

John

There's also the classic 1982 movie, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial. From IMDB (www.imdb.com/title/tt0083866/): "A meek and alienated little boy finds a stranded extraterrestrial. He has to find the courage to defy the authorities to help the alien return to its home planet." ET go home...
