I have all the clothes a body could ever want for living/working in a cold climate - none of which will be worth a darn in Jeddah. I could buy lots of summer clothes here and bring them with me or I could buy them over there. My students tell to bring next to nothing and buy everything over there. The problem is that I have really big shoulders and long arms (I look like a gorilla.) and I'm concerned about finding clothes that fit. I wear a 17.5/35 shirt and I weigh less than 200 lbs.

Guys: Am I likely to find clothes that fit in KSA?

On a related note, has anyone had experience in KSA with having custom clothes made from scratch? Several male students have told me they've had custom suits made and the cost was much less than here.

Yes, plenty of gorillas in KSA, so you should have no problem finding something that fits you. If you're not happy with what you find, then yes go to a tailor. The cost of tailor made clothes are quite reasonable .

I always wonder what to drag all the way around the world and what to just buy when I get there.

Stupidest thing I ever brought on a trip: flashlight for a summer camping trip in Alaska.

Thank you for the laugh as you gave me a good one! Yes, that is probably the dumbest thing one could ever bring given the circumstances. I've been to AK in the summer and a flashlight is worthless.

One of the positives for me about Jeddah/Riyadh/Khobar was the availability of reasonabvle tailors who could run up shirts, trousers etc at reasonable prices

Yes, but the tailors haven't got a clue about style and don't work well from scratch. Take the clothes you like, and they'll be able to copy them exactly. You can get nice clothes in a store in Saudi--a Pierre Cardin shirt, for example--and then get copies done for a fraction of the price, and in a material of your choice.

Can anyone recommend a good tailor in Riyadh? I live near Sahara Mall. I have the skirt to be copied, and I bought the fabric, but I don't know of any tailors.

You might post on one of the popular, general Saudi expat sites for better exposure to your question. That's where I've received quick and useful info on topics like these. Try a google search with expat saudi forum. Also, check with some of the abaya shops in the mall; they have tailors making their garments. I'm sure they'd be able to help you or at least point you in the right direction.

I still use my shirts and trousers elegantly crafted by "Modern Tailors" of Khobar.

where exactly are the tailors located in Khobar? I haven't stumbled across them yet.

Dear Anne,

There are a couple of guys that run a tailor shop upstairs from Lulu (the old one, not the new one in Batha). They do excellent work and are cheap. The shop is called Genius.
