OP, hey, we're in the same city! I think China is the next big thing. I've found a couple jobs that pay similar what I make here in Suwon, plus give housing and the chance to do IELTS.
Blatant advertising! The poster keeps on spamming forums with "IELTS" and who knows what else. FTs watch out!

China is worth all the hype for the right reasons. One of those reasons is a serious teaching that locals need so much although are deprived of. But unfortunately another one is the adventure which has cast a shadow on the ESL in China.

Amen

"Do" IELTS? Teach from a Chinese IELTS textbook or be an examiner? "Teaching" IELTS is one huge bore, especially if the students cannot think critically.

I said IELTs testing. Guess I should have said IELTs examining. Will make a greater effort to be more specific in future.

Traditional ESL positions are still stuck at the same rates as they were 5 years ago. While higher amounts are advertised often they come with extra duties either part of the official contract or added on as informal duties. Essentially you end up paying for the extra income in some manner. From what I have seen the well paid positions that posters here claim are common, are only available for people with decent education related qualifications/experience or are passed around through connections. i.e. who you know rather than made available to everyone.

As a second tier city, university positions are stuck at 4500 - 5000 for 14-16 hours teaching. Most private language mills are stuck at 6000 - 7000 with variable requirements. Apartments are standard although a few drop them in favor of low rent allowances... so, things haven't changed much from when I first came to Xian almost 4 years ago.

Private teaching remains the largest chance of gaining serious income. For my own part, from watching the market here in Xi'an, I can only see opening my own company targeting a specific area of the market as being the only real viable way to make decent money.

There are some serious opportunities to make money from ESL in China but they're drying up fast. Working for others is unlikely to provide it unless you have very good qualifications and the necessary connections. Going it alone with the aim of building up a reliable business seems to be the only real way to stay here long term.

I wonder how many among the throngs who will undoubtedly seek positions as an IELTS examiner in the near future will acquire the requirements to become an IELTS examiner before applying and actually becoming one.

This page indicates the requirements:

http://www.britishcouncil.org/africa-ielts-minimum-professional-requirements.pdf

Yet another relevant question is just how many of the applicants who are already working as IELTS examiners in China actually DO possess the professional experience requirement. Last year I met a young man from the U.S. who (allegedly) had just graduated from college, never taught a class in his life, and had no experience grading or administering a test of any kind, yet he was an IELTS examiner. A Chinese recruiter got him the job.

Cormac, it depends how hard you want to work.

I know people in Xi'an earning more than 20,000 a month working 10 hours.

I get 5500 plus free accomodation, for 3 hours of teaching a week.

Just gotta work your way up. If you bail out then come back in, you kinda shift around at the bottom.

Yup, I know such people too. Perhaps you should mention the types of positions they're in and the types of education/experience they have behind them.

Excuse me... what? how does a recruiter get someone a job as a British Council IELTS examiner??? BC direct-hires and trains...

As an IELTS teacher, i can understand... that's nothing.

But, as I've found out, 3 years is 3 years Sad

(if this person really is an examiner, and without the required experience and quals, I'd really like to know!) ...Unless they got a Diploma or Bachelor in Teaching, and their course had a teaching component (which, still, shouldn't count that much!)

Seriously? you've got to be kidding. I've got over 8000 posts and have been on the forum for 9 years (and was on the forum when it was in the old format)

I work for a uni in the Hermit Kingdom. NOt related to IELTS whatsoever. Don't do and have NEVER done IELTS. Cambridge, yes. IELTS, No. There are too many foreigners in Korea that snatch up all the IELTS opps, which is why I'm looking at going to China.

And I want to give the exams. I've taught exam prep for years and don't want to do it again.
