I am going to Istanbul to do a Tefl course later this year. I do not have a degree (have an associates), and was wondering if this will pose a problem in getting a work permit?
I have seen this question answered before, but found one thread that stated the respondent managed to get a work permit with only A-level equivalent qualifications....whilst the other posts say you need a degree.
I have seen many jobs advertised in Istanbul that do not state a degree is required, only a Tefl certificate. Would I be right in assuming that all these companies are willing to employ people illegally, as they do not have the right criteria for the work permit? Or is the degree preferred and not essential?
I have tried to find out from the Ministry of Education, but there is no info that I could find/translate.
Thanks for any info Smile

You are correct. Many times a company will hire you and not bother getting you a work permit. The school I work at takes care of my residency permit, but doesn't bother with the work permit. It doesn't seem to be a problem. It's very easy to find work here!

A lot of companies say they will get you a work permit and then never follow through. Many teachers are actually working illegally. Some schools don't even help with the residence permit, which can be very daunting as you have to make an appointment and fill out forms (in Turkish, of course...) Find out how many Native Teachers are working at the branch and ask if you can speak to them about their experiences. If they say the company was helpful and treated them well, then you might feel better about taking the chance. But if they say, "Yeah, I had to do everything on my own" then I would personally be very careful.

I see no one mentioned if A levels qualify one to get a work visa.

I know it is possible to submit your education for review and receive an equivalency, just not sure where to send it.

Anyone know?
