Hi all,
Would it make a difference in getting hired if you personally show up for the interview with Amity at one of their selected cities in North America as opposed to applying online with their 500 word essay asking why you want to teach in Japan?

Thanks a bunch.

I think you have to follow procedure:

    * apply first
    * be told if you are accepted at that stage
    * learn when/where the interview is

Just showing up at an interview is bad form, IMO. They will not be prepared for you.

OP, are you serious? It's just a 500 word essay for crying out loud! Consider it as practice for writing cover letters and stuff.

Yeah I'm serious. I felt like applying there awhile ago but the fact that I had to write that essay convinced me otherwise. I just felt like it was a waste of time when I could be doing other things.

flyingcolours,

If you can't take the time to prepare a fairly short essay (something that many, many employers do ask for), why should the employer waste their time interviewing you?

I know that may seem snide, but from their perspective, if you can't spend the 30min ~ 1 hour to write the essay, isn't that telling them something important?

Tsian,
Most employers don't ask for anything like a 500 word essay. With my education and experience (tons of good references) I just figure if that isn't good enough to cut it then I ain't gonna waste my time with such trivialities.

Exactly. If they are going to treat potential employees like babies, they deserve to be bypassed. Your resume should be all they need.

Good luck, FC. You're gonna' need it.

Japanese culture is all about the trivialities. If you don't put on a show of effort with the trivialities, you will be labelled as lazy and irresponsible. I'm not saying that's a good thing or a bad thing ... that's just how it is.

By the way, you've already written 153 words on this thread. I'm not going to waste any more of my my time with your trivialities.

153 insightful words about a nonsense 500 words.
Don't need luck - just won't bend over for them - or anyone else Smile

Well, go ahead and prove me wrong, then.

I would never hire anybody who was incapable of doing such a simple thing. To get a job you have to prove that you want it. This is a very minor hoop, in the scheme of things...try applying to JET. Bureaucratic minutiae is a pronounced fact of life in Japan.

Only because people allow it to be like that.
If all NET's said no dice then time wasting activities like this would not happen.

Well, aren't we lucky that you've come to shake us all up. Of course, you'll need a visa first, and that means you'll need to get a job offer, but I'm sure the pettifogging bureacrats of the Ministry of Justice will crumble before a go-getter like you.

Some things are necessary but the 500 word essay is pathetic.
But hey you wanna go ahead and kowtow to that I won't stop your pursuit to be a victim of the stupidity imposed by others.
