This is a common problem around the Gulf. They have this idea that teachers are the same as factory workers or secretaries. So, there we are... sitting about the offices staring at each other for hours.
At least now there are computers and one can surf the net. That was a major improvement for my last few years in the Gulf, but prior to '99 or so, it made for a very long, boring day.

Someone told me they have a low opinion of teachers over there - any truth in that?

Kind of true, Jerky. Mainly because the teachers try to make them work.

Actually, I recall now that I had a Saudi student at a university on the south coast of England. He was completely out of his depth and rarely if ever did any work.
He would keep resubmitting the same incorrect or substandard effort, taking no notice of my feedback and formative comments, in the vain hope that I would get tired of teaching him and would give up.
He didn't even have the same to attend anything like the minimum number of classes to safeguard his visa.
Guess what?! The department passed him anyway even though he failed the attendance requirement and both the assessments.
Money talks also in UK schools and I no longer scold the Thais.

Dear JerkyBoy,
Well, it sounds like you've had an excellent "dress rehearsal" for Saudi - the classroom part, anyway.
Regards,

Most Edex teachers are on work visit visas. It is a pain, but somewhat bearable.
