Reading your posts, Hobo, and your penchant for excitement, I don't think either Merida, or Mexico City will provide enough of that for you. You will most certainly find ESL jobs, plus more than enough excitement in Monterrey, NL, or Tampico, Tamaulipas. Beach areas will have no teaching opportunities at this time of year, and in these economic times. You mention you are experienced at Time Share. Even the TSS (sharks) are leaving Mexico in droves, because it's impossible to make a living these days. That's how tough things are with the economy. |

Hi Samantha, DF is not exciting? That surprises me. You mentioned Tampico and Monterrey, would it be easy to find work in a second-tier international school or even a bilingual school in these places? I really want to continue teaching in highschools. |

I didn't say Mexico City wasn't exciting. |

I don't know Sam, the hobo claims to have secondary school certification from either Holland or England (it wasn't clear which). I googled Colegio Bilingue Cancun and a whole bunch of options poped up. True--I'm not sure if any of them have openings for August, but they might and if he gets lucky and turns up in person at one that does. If he truely likes hot humid places, he could hit Cancun, then if no luck, Chetumal, followed by Cuidad del Carmen, and Villahermosa. From there he could continue to Coatzacoalcos or head inland... |

I have a friend in Cancun, who tells me things are grim for English teachers. She has more than one job, and has lived there for some time. If a job comes up, they will hire teachers with roots, long before a back-packer type. Same where I live. |

Hey, while googling, I found an add for a family looking for an English Speaking Nanny for their two children in Chetumal paying a hundred dollars a week to work from 4 to 9 pm Monday to Friday. Sounds perfect for some of our pessimists who claim you can earn that much in Mexico! |

Hobo, my only concern is that $2,000 USD is not very much to both travel on, then spend to get set up and survive until the paychecks start coming in. It would be cutting it mighty thin to try to do both. |

I think you're probably right, as much as I like the idea of wondering around and finding my paradise I think I'd better just head straight to DF where work is pretty much guaranteed. |

I dont think anyone is "encouraging" the OP to work illegally anywhere.. the point is that Mexico is not the UK (my home country), almost all teachers who come here work illegally, atleast for a time.. and if this isnt your experience, then you cant be living in the same Mexico as me. Nobodys encouraging working illegally, but it happens, and in moderation; its not the end of the world here in Mexico.. Mexico isnt the UK, philosophical debates aside, im talking about the reality here.
Cancun is a pretty good place to fly into from Europe, due to the massive savings on the price of the flight. For example a direct flight from Mexico City to London costs between $13-15,000 MX.. you can find charter flights from London to Cancun for $6-7,000 MX if your lucky like I was! then add another $2,000 for the flight from Cancun to DF, thats $8-9,000 against $13-15,000! Economically its not a bad idea at all, its certainly how I get there and back.
The OP had many options on the table, so did I this time last year, I was looking at Korea, the Dominican Republic and Mexico, I chose Mexico, ive been here a year, I have a business here now and am doing pretty well.. last minute decisions are often the best decisions. |

I like your attitude! If you are serious about making it in Mexico, hopping on a place and taking the door to door approach is definetely the way to do it..
Infact I was in almost exactly the same position as you this time last year, so I can speak with some authority on the matter;
$2000 USD should get you about $23,500 Mexican Pesos.. that should easily last a few months until you can get hooked up with work, aswell as pay for the first few months rent etc.. as long as your fairly prudent and dont go mad, you should be just about ok with that, to get set up here. I bough about $30,000 pesos, and spent pretty liberally, and got set up just fine.
Youve ticked all the boxes in terms of degree, certificates etc..
Although it sounds amazing to live in Cancun, in terms of work.. unless you are amazingly lucky; the chances are that you wont be staying in Cancun, there isnt much teaching work, what there is; pays low in comparision to the cost of living, which is high.
Last year I headed to Merida and hooked up some job interviews there, I would highly recommend it to you.. its a dam near perfect city, amazing, lots of schools; two drawbacks though, the first is that it is insanely hot and humid, the second drawback is that in Merida its supremely difficult to get teaching work over the summer months, and things dont start back up until September (Unlike here in Central Mexico; Queretaro where things dont really slow down over the summer).. so you could find yourself at a loose end over july and august, be warned, im led to believe this is the case for all of the Yucatan/Quintana Roo. Maybe someone else can weigh in for confirmation on that.
Merida is about 3 hours from Cancun on a bus.. ive also heard of things happening work wise in Campeche, but I cant personally vouch for that. My advice actually, would be to arrive into Cancun, search for work, and if theres nothing avail.. head to central Mexico, which lacks the beach, but has alot alot alot of potential and opportunities, and the cost of living is reasonable..
Shouldnt be a problem turning your tourist visa into a work visa, search on this forum for thr requirements though, you need to get your degree apostilled by the foreign office in milton keynes, and stamped by a public notary.. it can all be done in an afternoon if you travel to the office in Milton Keynes, you can do it by post, but I believe it takes awhile..
Good Luck! |
Hi -
My husband to be is a mexican citizen and already in Merida now.
I was talking to Harmon Hall in Merida through email but now have totally lost contact.
Do you happen to know is Harmon Hall has changed directors?
Do you know of any language schools you would recommend in Merida over others for me to check?
I have:
- BA in studio art painting
- CTESOL certificate
- early childhood development permit with FBI background check clearance. |

I assume that you mean HH stopped communicating with you, rather than that you lost their address. This is common and probably means that they have all the staff needed right now through the end of the semester. The best way to land a job in Merida is make phone contact and follow up with a visit. That will be easy enough to do...HH has at least 2 schools in Merida. BTW, HH has their own training program and will likely not allow you to teach there until you go through their program.
Another good school is Centro de Idiomas del Sureste, which has 3 locations.
Neither of these operations pay well. The top salary at CIS is 72 pesos an hour.
Good luck.

I guess I have lived in Mexico too long, but 72 pesos is double what I was making when I moved to Mexico (ages ago). It's not all that bad for a newbie, really. It gets a foot in the door and a new teacher can go from there. |

I'm confused GH. On June 5 you wrote, in the general discussion forum, that, "I am planning to relocate to Columbia." The next day you announced, in the Mexico forum, that you bought a one-way ticket to Cancun. Which is it? |
I'm impulsive; one day I was going to Colombia; the next I bought a ticket to Mexico. |
Impulsive and TEFL go together like PB&J on bread
BTW Global-Hobo, did you find work in Cancun? Still in Mexico? Would love an update |
