I'm fresh back from the wonderful TESOL Arabia conference this year. The Job Fair was well worth the trip to Acton.
I was surprised to NOT see the following univ. I know they are hiring and some are hiring A LOT. Have there needs been satisfied from within KSA? Does anyone know WHY they wouldn't recruit @ the premiere recruiting event in the Gulf?
PMU (Prince Moh Univ)
KAU (King Abdulaziz Univ)
KAUST
PSU (Prince Sultan Univ)
JIC/JUC (Jubail...)
Univ of Dammam
KFU (King Faisal Univ)
Another interesting question: Why do some of these (and other Gulf univ) go to TESOL in Philly to recruit? Isn't there enough recyclable vets in the Gulf to meet their hiring needs?

As I said on your other thread, KAUST would have no need to attend any conference what with the fact that they have like... 2 or 3 TEFL teachers, if that many. All they would have to do is run an ad here on Dave's for a pittance and be buried in applications immediately.
As to the rest of the Saudi institutions, from what I read here it would seem that they nearly all use recruiters who are certainly too cheap to pay what it costs to go and recruit at a conference. They aren't concerned about getting qualified teachers... they want only bodies to get their recruiting money. They can do that with a few cheap internet ads.
Why would they go to the US conference instead? Maybe to find new blood rather than the jaded individuals rattling around the Gulf. Also, those universities who do direct hiring will go because they get a free trip paid for by their employer.

Not exactly. The universities listed do hire directly and have been advertising on various TEFL Internet job sites including higheredjobs.com and TESOL.org's career center. Perhaps they weren't at the TESOL Arabia job fair because 1) they no longer have openings or only have a small number of positions still open; 2) they plan to do all their recruiting at the TESOL conference in Philly later this month; or 3) they weren't impressed with TESOL Arabia's lack of organization and decided not to attend. Who knows. |

Dear scot47,
I believe W.C. Fields would have chosen Dubai:
It's said that Fields joked that his epitaph should read, "On the Whole, I'd Rather Be in Philadelphia"
W.C. Fields had a famous quip about Philadelphia: "They had a contest: first prize is one week in Philadelphia, second prize is two weeks in Philadelphia."
Regards,
John |

Perhaps another reason they're doing the majority of their recruiting at the Philly TESOL conference is the appeal of interviewing Americans already on US soil. The long-winded employment visa process can get started sooner.
(All this talk about Philly makes me hungry for a cheesesteak!) |
