In Peru, not much. Where I am in Asia now, a lot. In China, it'll help you get into the good uni teaching positions.

Ain't that the truth. Smile

Sad that we're having to use the word 'lucky' though. Qualifications and networking help a lot but in TEFL you also need LUCK, which can be elusive.

She's in South Korea. Most (maybe all) university jobs in SK require a master's degree - and usually any master's degree will do. At least that's how it was when I was there. Maybe some unis now ask for an MA in TESOL or linguistics, but I'd wager most are happy with any subject area - certainly in Eng Lit.

Here in HK your Eng Lit master's would also hold good currency for uni posts, though some would be picky about an MA TESOL, and uni posts in HK are much thinner on the ground than in Korea (and much harder work).

Elsewhere in Asia I couldn't say, but methinks a speciific requirement for an MA TESOL in unis is rare, except in linguistics departments and the like.

A masters is also essential for any university work in the U.S.

Yep, applied to one job in each. Waiting for the China contract. Just applied to RMIT in VN. However, I think Vietnam and China are both out, taxes are high in VN and going up in China. Sigh, I think I'm stuck.

Oh well, that's ok, I'll have to take a pay cut next year, but hopefully will have less hours. I can't believe it's only the 3 week, I'm already exhausted. Two teachers quit within the last month, I've got some of those classes.

On the bright side, I've decided I'd like to be an academic advisor, goign to try to get more into the admin side of things within the next five years.

Can't really talk about Korea here, things have changed though, if you want more info, check out the Korean board, or send PMs.

OP

You would stand a good chance at an ALT job in Japan. And maybe you'd be able to get a university job in Korea (register there and ask- I've never taught there). I have no idea what the situation is like in Taiwan, but maybe look into working there too (those are the countries that traditionally people start out in in [and often stay for a long time] to save money or pay back student debt and get a salary that will allow you to do that without much or any experience teaching English language.

Look into the JET program if you have the time to wait (you wouldn't actually be in Japan until August 2013 if you get in. Applications are only once a year, they come available around September, you interview in the fall and leave end of July or beginning of August).

Then you get a couple of years of experience, save money, and start doing a masters degree in TESOL by distance. That way you'll at least know if it's actually what you want before you start spending money on it If it isn't, then look into other ways to put your MA in English Lit to work.
