PostPosted: Sun Mar 25, 2012 1:18 pm    Post subject: Teachers from DD Dragon schools in Shanghai deported? Reply with quote

I was reading about the teacher that died recently in Hangzhou on the Lost Laowai blog and a guy named Bob left a comment and said that 7 teachers from DD Dragon in Shanghai were deported recently for not having proper working visas. Now I'm not sure if this is connected to the Hangzhou incident but if not it seems like DD Dragon is really getting hammered lately. Anyone working for the company can confirm this?

Here is what he wrote,

"Excuse me for using this thread for my own personal reasons. I am very sorry for what has happened to this family.

I am not here to go on a long rant. I am here to try and get out information which I think is very important. I was deported from China last week, and it is not clear when/if I can go back. I worked for DD Dragon in Shanghai. Everyone who worked for the schools run by Andy (2 Hongkou branches, 1 Pudong) was deported. There were 7 teachers in all I believe. Although far from perfect, working at the school was tolerable, and I was planning on finishing 1 year and moving onto something else. We were promised working visas, but were never provided them. It seemed the managements norm was to ride out the tourist visa for as long as possible, and then get a business visa working for some fake company. The police caught onto the school, conducted an investigation interviewing everyone who worked there, then issue us a new visa saying we had to leave China within ten days.

I have contacted the Chinese embassy in NYC, and they have told me for a matter like this, I would need to come in and explain what happened. It may be a long time before I am allowed to go back to China. You need to be extremely careful if you are considering working for this school. The police are clearly already onto them. Once again, my intention is not to go on a rant and say horrible things about this school. My intention is to try and prevent this from happening to other people."

Yeah, that's what CAN happen if you come here and work illegally. Often times this doesn't happen.......but it CAN. and it's good to be reminded that these things are possible if the authorities wanted to actually enforce the law.

Sad to say, but it's hard to feel bad for the guy.

This can happen to anyone here. Even with the proper credentials. Read your SAEFA contract. You will not be deported that cost money for China. You will be given ten days to leave the country. You will pay a fine . Deportation means a jail term until someone comes up with some cash.
THis site is not a place to find out about what goes on in China. It is dedicated to getting people to come to China and provide recruiters with a source of income. Recruiters are Davids bread and butter

No, it was some other Lobster's response to a typically snotty post that for some mysterious reason is no longer here.

There's probably more to it than just the visa thing. How many of us have visas from other schools or companies? How many would wager DD in this case was turned in by that other school or company after refusing to pay an 'extortionist' rate for said visas?

I don't think so. The school drew unwanted attention so....well...it drew attention. There is some saying about nail and a hammer that comes to mind. Unless of course the teachers were deported prior to the young mans death in which case I am incorrect.

I would agree with this. My previous school had a FT die midcontract due to a heart condition and it caused the provincial school bureau or w/e their called to crack down on the school pretty hard. We got regular visits from provincial inspectors, FT's all were subject to interviewing and going out to dinners (oh the horror!) and all kinds of rules got changed. They can't hire anyone over 50 now, physical exams have to be done in the capital, and the FAO has to regularly go to the provincial school people to give reports. They fired another FT because they actually investigated his diploma and found out it was a fake.

One random mishap or a bit of bad luck can mess things up for a lot of people. Granted if you're not breaking the law you generally don't have anything to worry about. But if a FT dies it creates a lot of trouble for the schools.
