Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone has any advice on the application procedure for the self-employed FM3 visa. Does anyone happen to know if this can be applied for before going to Mexico? I like the idea of not having my visa tied to one specific school. I have monthly income from other places as well and wondering if I can use that for the application process.

I want to take some time to explore opening up my own small school eventually.

Thanks so much for any advice anyone may have!

Traditionally, it has been impossible to get before going to Mexico, but with the long process of proposed changes to the visa process (still postponed, latest rumours are saying until after the elections), anything is possible. I dont mean that it will necessarily be possible or more likely now than it used to be, but that no one really knows.

In my experience having an employer-tied work permission paved the way to switching to an independent work permission. But this was about 10 years ago.

About 4 years ago, I applied for my initial FM3, which gave me permission to work independently as an English teacher. I used an excellent immigration lawyer here in the D.F. because I didn't want to take any chances having my application denied, and it was granted. Since then I have renewed my visa on my own, and things have always gone smoothly. I wouldn't count on the new regulations, whenever they finally kick in, letting you apply for a work visa while you are still in your home country, but, as notamiss says, anything is possible!

I don't think it can be done beforehand but it's not a complicated procedure once you're here. The complications come when you have to start dealing with the SAT... Rolling Eyes

That's why I have an accountant to figure out my monthly taxes and to file my yearly tax statements for me. It's money well spent!

Take my word for it.

The people at the Mexican consulate in San Francisco know me by my first name I'm in there so much.

Your can't get your visa before you get to Mexico.
I tried.
