Today, March 31, I received the back half of my March salary. NO TAXES! I mean, I got my regular net pay for which I am contracted. Contract signing time comes up this month so we'll see if anything changes come next July 1.

Here is a twist to the social tax saga - it only applies to foreigners who are paid in RMB.

but... since most of us are employed by Chinese companies that deposit into Chinese banks... its a moot point (makes sense as deposits made overseas - to include Hong Kong can not be tracked by government).

Adds to the difficulty that FTs have in taking money out of the country legally while still in country, as many forum members can attest to...

Valid point - but not all of us.

I work for a Chinese company and my salary goes into a Chinese bank, but I'm not paid in RMB - I'm paid in US$.

I'm also here in Suzhou and received my full pay this month. I got a notice from my FAO in February telling me I would be enrolled in the program at the end of that month and heard nothing more since...I'm guessing the gov't hasn't got its sh%$ together yet as we are supposed to get a shiny Social Security Card with a number when we start paying in...

So maybe next month we will lose 88% of our paycheck? Hard to tell what is going on...

The government document I was given from my FAO from the said we would all be issued a SS card. It went into quite some detail about the card. This would be given to us, not the school. I will definitely make sure I have this as proof that the taxes being deducted from my paycheck are actually being paid.

The FAO here likes to hold on to documents (passports, FEC, diplomas, etc). Even when I got my Internet and GSM phone services she was upset that I did it without her approval... And then demanded the receipts/ contracts for the school's records...

Your FAO likes to break the law. By Chinese law, you have to have your passport at all times.

I said "likes". After I received my passport and my FEC back, it would be a cold day in China before she gets them back again. Other FTs have gone without their passports for weeks at a time... And whats with the thousands of photos required here? Almost every week they are asking us to provide photos. My face could break 1000 mirrors, so its not looks...

Just like before the tax, the payroll office doesn't reply to emails or calls for receipts on taxes paid...

I'm entering this thread late ... I'm wondering if anyone else is also paying the tax. I would rather not scroll back 14 pages to find out:)

I don't know if my College has started paying. Faculty were promised last fall that our take-home pay would remain the same until the end of our contract, June 30, 2012.

As I understand it, it's a 30% tax on employer and 10% on the worker. I wonder if joint-ventures can remain profitable after such a hit. I wonder how many workers will bail if they see contracts that offer substantially less than their current salary.

Informed comment welcome!

"Many here are having it [social security taxes] taken out. Do you think we are lying?" -shadowrider

No, I don't ...but I have scrolled back to page 10 and so far only shadowrider has had social security taxes deducted.

Anyone else?

perhaps someone already paying the tax would like to start a new
thread where we can keep track of who's paying and how much.
