I got a lot to read and learn about, and probably should wait to ask these questions, but im anxious.

About me, Im young mid twenties, white native english speaker, have a bachelors degree in history, no true relevant teaching experience besides i have 6 months tutoring elementary kids and almost 6 months teaching english to latin american immigrants. Both of those are volunteering, with no pay.

My one negative is i was arrested 6 years ago for underage consumtion and resisting arrest. They were misdemeanors and i would have it expunged but i had previous underage i had already expunged.

I know in generalties thailand doesnt care about background checks, but would having a background check with me only showing that arrest be a useful document or detrimental to my case?

If arriving in bangkok in mid january of next year with about 5k saved up, what are the odds of me landing an university job at say 35k baht min?

thank you very much for answering this thread and the really good responses on other threads i have read. great forum

Get an out-of-state background check done; your past history goes away and becomes a non-issue.

Landing a uni job that pays 35k with just a BA and no experience = not bloody likely. (Landing the uni job would be tough enough (virtually impossible) but they also pay crap (25k is common)).

Landing a job in a private school (K-12) or language academy that pays 35k is very doable but not in January. April/May are the times to be here on the ground. Dec-Feb are the worst times.

I had a couple of uni gigs with a BA at 30,000. If Thais like you they will find a way to hire you. I was about 63 at the time. It's kind of a form over substance society. They'll judge you on your dress and physical appearance. They have absolutely nothing against young teachers. There is an ideal age tho, probably about 40 for a man. There are plenty of language schools to get you started. The pay is generally the same or even higher. The big name unis don't pay as much as you'd think, plenty of status for sure, and good chance of privates.
