Hello all:
I recently graduated from college with a B.A. in english and education. While I was attending college I got a DUI conviction and posession or marijuana. They were mistakes, but I wonder if I will have a problem getting teaching visa to teach in Tawain or Korea. does anyone know if this wil be a problem? I have heard they do a history and will deny anyone with even a DUI.
Thanks!

The visa application for Taiwan asks if you have ever been a drug trafficker.
When I first read that, I was tempted to ask, "So, exactly what drug use is allowed?"
I think very few people qualify for classification as drug traffickers, but I didn't want to ask the nice people at TECO and get strange ideas into their heads.
However, I went to the Dept. of Public Safety and got a little form that vouched that I had no criminal record -- mostly because I wasn't sure if I had ever done anything that got put in my permanent record. I know I've had speeding tickets, but apparently those don't qualify as real crimes.
The form also has a little proviso that says, "Answering YES does not necessarily prevent your application from being approved."
I don't think DUI is the same as drug trafficking. You were using drugs and driving through traffic, but you weren't trafficking as such.
I would get a U.S. lawyer to advise me and find out what to say.
I think you can download sample forms at the Taiwan ECO website.

Thanks for the information. But did they actually require a criminal history from the police department? that is what I am wondering. I guess I can just get it and it will show a DUI and posession conviction. I think those are crimes more than just speeding tickets, heheh

Hmmmm. Seems like *EVERYONE* in Taiwan is guilty of this one. Have you seen the way folks drive here?
Not that I'm picking on the poor Taiwanese who, when not behind the wheel, turn out to be some of the nicest people on the planet. |
