do you have a Master's? If not, the jobs that are available won't be all that attractive.) |
I will have it in hand in June. MA in Education with a specialization in English Language Learners (ELL).
Does it matter if it is an online degree? Fully accredited or course and I do have seven glorious years of teaching experience. Three and a half years teaching adults at a community college and three and a half years teaching adults in Mexico City.

Dear EFLeducator,
I'm afraid it does matter - almost every reputable institution in the Kingdom doesn't credit on-line degrees, Stupid, I know, but that's the way it is, for now, anyway.
Does your degree SAY it's an on-line one? No need to mention it if not. And is your teaching experience full-time. Can you get letters of recommendation from the places you worked?
Regards,
John |

You just baby sit and anyone under the illusion of being a teacher needs to give their head a shake. |

The deciding factor isn't your or our opinion of what we need to teach them, but of what the employers require and demand.
Simple as that...

Dear Hatcher,
"You just baby sit and anyone under the illusion of being a teacher needs to give their head a shake."
One's personal experience in the Kingdom does not extend to every teaching job there.

But JerkyBoy, doesn't that happen to you wherever you go!? |

I was never spat at and never had stones thrown at me. Once a pirate taxidriver asked me to leave his car when I revealed my nationality ! |

Perhaps the taxi driver had a hard time giving up the whisky, or almost choked on some shortbread once??? |

Ok. I've been to Detroit John. Was there in the late 60s. So I guess I qualify too. Right? As I recall the police gave my dad an escort out of "a part of town" that we were not supposed to be in.
Regards.

I lived in Riyadh for almost half a year teaching at KSU and I really wouldn't recommend anyone to choose to go there unless its with someone like Aramco where you will make so much money or the British Council where they have you living in the Diplomatic Quarter.
You can save a lot of money there but you can also save a lot of money in other Gulf countries and your lifestyle will be a lot more pleasant. Even students were bewildered why Westerners would choose to come to their country to live when they do not even have cinemas! Which is something they all seemed to want.
There are a few good things about it such as there is a good Expat community and trips to the desert via the Hash are great. But the general atmosphere is too oppressive and I am not talking about in a political sense, it is quite hard to describe it, its just there are too many people there who are not happy because there is not much in the way of life there and the students are not very pleasant to teach if you actually care about them making progress and achieving something.
Life is too short and there are other places you can work and save the same or almost the same amount of money where life is much more enjoyable and fun and it certainly is not worth the price paid in the loss of female friendship and companionship. |

I would echo what Rufus said and say that if money is your main concern, other places pay almost the same and yet your quality of life is much higher.
If you cant get a job anywhere but the KSA or the money doesnt compare, I would suggest either Tabok or Damman AND demand a multiple re entry visa. From Tabok, you can go to Aqaba or Amman and in Damman you can get to Bahrain. |
